Fashion's most important night of the year took place on May 5th, with the dress code "Tailored for You" as the opening to the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition, dedicated to the influence of Black style and designers on contemporary fashion. This was one of the few (even, perhaps, the first on recent history) editions of this event where the men who attended stood out for understanding and exploring the theme of the gala, moreso than their female counterparts.

As expected from a celebration of black dandy in today's fashion, there were multiple oversized, tailored outfits. Among them, the ones that stood out the most were the Bordeaux red, pimp-like set of Teyana Taylor, Lauryn Hill wearing head to toe yellow butter with a sky blue Birkin bag, TikTok star Khaby Lamé with a suit accesorized with dozens of clocks, Shaboozey covered in turquoise beads, Pusha T on a classic red wine smoking suit covered in Swarovski crystals by Louis Vouitton, and Lewis Hamilton in a full ivory white set designed by Grace Wales Bonner.

A MET Gala wouldn't be the same without guests who decide to not follow the dress code, favoring more personal choices. The two most remarkable examples of such guests this year were Cynthia Erivo with a custom Givenchy long-sleeved corset covered in multi-colored rhinestones along with a dramatic black cape, and Diana Ross with an impressive white gown combined with a 5.5 meters-long cape and a bedazzled feather hat, resulted from a collaboration between her son Evan Ross and Ugo Mozie.

Not to ignore the talents and efforts of every person involved in such a high level production, but this year's MET Gala did not generate the same interest as previous occasions. It is very likely that we are at the dawn of an era in which the most relevant expressions of fashion will not come from traditional media and celebrities, and that the most known people of today do not have the same ability to influence the style conversation as they did some years ago.

Maybe the MET Gala would greatly benefit in the visual and cultural departments if, for future editions, it included more guests that are connected to the fashion zeitgeist, along with the usual actors, models, singers and similar guests. The uproar that came when news broke out that stylist Wisdom Kaye (probably the best contemporary black dandy there is right now) was snubbed is proof that, beyond being just another charity event, the MET Gala has not met its ethos of celebrating fashion as an art form, that it could really use a restructuring on its vision and execution.
